This past Saturday in the beautiful coastal town of Rockport MA, PARMA showcased five spectacular performances at the Shalin Liu Performance Center at “Music By the Sea,” a special concert presented by the PARMA Music Festival. The concert was a taste of the genre-defying, eclectic, and diverse programs that you can be sure to experience at this year’s Festival, taking place in Portsmouth NH, August 13-16.
As the guests flowed down from the lovely reception hall, the evening opened with Sarah Borrello, a young singer/songwriter from the Boston area, whose presence at the piano matched her powerful and emotive voice.
Next, Lyricora, a 23-part choral group conducted by C. Thomas Brooks, sang four a cappella works with an elegance and a grace that was inspiring to all listening. The selections demonstrated the ensemble’s ability to execute both contemporary and traditional pieces with passion and precision.
Following Lyricora, duo526, comprised of pianist Futaba Niekawa and violinist Kerry DuWors, gave beautiful and moving interpretations of two sonatas, a Janáček and a Grieg, which are featured on their upcoming Navona Records release, BALLADE.
Then composer and pianist Erik Lindgren, members of Goli Music – percussionist Vessela Stoyanova and cellist Valerie Thompson – and saxophonist, flutist, and composer Ken Field, a member of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, took to the stage. Playing original compositions written by Erik, the four performers brought an energy and playfulness to the fusion and tango-inspired pieces.
Finally, cellist Paige Stockley performed the five movements of composer Peter Vukmirovic Stevens’ Navona Records release, AUGUST RUINS (2013). Stockley’s wonderful and gripping interpretation of Stevens’ intense, challenging, and expressive work provided the conclusion which the exceptional evening deserved.
PARMA would like to thank all who came out and supported Saturday’s performance, and the accommodating staff of the Shalin Liu.
