MIKA MARIMBA MADNESS (Digital EP)
Mika Yoshida, Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez, Peter Stoltzman
Big Round Records BR8920
Big Round Records is proud to present a digital audio release of the acclaimed DVD MIKA MARIMBA MADNESS, featuring a breathtaking performance from Japan’s virtuoso marimbist Mika Yoshida alongside drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Eddie Gomez, and pianist Peter Stoltzman.
Praised for her “quiet strength” (DownBeat) and “high-wire” energy (LA Times), Mika’s playing is tight, expressive, and virtuosic. Mika—along with Gadd and Gomez, who easily live up to their reputations—is able to navigate arrangements of tunes by jazz greats including Chick Corea, Bill Douglas, and Billy Strayhorn with panache.
VIOLA TANGO ROCK CONCERTO
Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá | Anibal Dos Santos
Navona Records NV5865
This historic DVD is a document of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá’s version of Benjamin Yusupov’s Viola Tango Rock Concerto, hailed as “the greatest concerto ever written for the viola” by Maxim Vengerov. Played at the Auditorio León of Greiff of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia on June 12th, 2009, this performance — as original and striking as its 2005 world premiere — features solo performances from violist Aníbal Dos Santos on classic and electric viola, Master Venanzio Cipolliti on accordion, Carlos Posada on acoustic guitar, and Andrés Leiva, Luis Alberto Ramírez and Carlos Andrés Cortés playing rock passages in a masterful conjunction of sounds and corporeal movements. Dos Santos, the OFB viola group leader since 1998, plays the classic and electric viola with great technical skill and artistic commitment, but also dances the tango before during the concert, accompanied by Gina Medina, the award-winning Colombian dancer.

Philadelphia’s first tango music ensemble, The Oscuro Quintet, evokes the passion and the grace of tango from dance floors to concert halls with a mind toward both the music of the past and the vanguard of progression. As their first full release, this self-titled album provides a document of the Quintet’s dedication to both well-established staples of tango and new, progressive forms of the genre, including pieces composed by members of the group. Guitarist Alban Bailly, pianist Thomas Lee, accordionist Shinjoo Cho, violinist June Bender, and bassist Ben Blazer bring their varied backgrounds together to form a spectacular whole. The combination of their talents not only meets the expectations of passion and flair in tango, it also starts a new path for the genre’s evolution.
PRELUDES & BAGATELLES
Ravello Records RR7819
PRELUDES & BAGATELLES is the latest release from renowned composer Michael Matthews, featuring his dramatic 14 Preludes, selections from his collection of Bagatelles, and the epilogistic Postlude. Expertly performed by acclaimed Belgian pianist Daan Vandewalle, the pieces on this disc encapsulate Matthews’ brilliance with solo piano composition and highlight his versatile craftsmanship, which he is able to alter to accommodate a wide variety of moods, emotions, and aspects of musicality.

SOUND SPECTRUM features works for piano, soprano, and orchestra by composer Allen Bonde. Bonde draws from his personal experiences and feelings to craft beautiful pieces with a wide range of styles: Fantasia
for Piano and Orchestra, a cohesive work cast in traditional harmony; Three Elizabethan Songs
and Three Elizabethan Songs Revisited
, a set of works blending simplicity and sophistication; Symphony No. 1, a kaleidoscopic orchestral piece with astounding instrumental color; Rose Window
, a musical representation of the breathtaking Rose Window at Mount Holyoke Chapel; Sonus I, a 12-tone-based and freely composed piece in variation form; Four Shakespeare Songs
, a fresh take on the Bard’s work stylistically reflective of the 1920s; You Were The One
, based on the sensitive poetry of Mary Jo Salter; and Encore Blues
, a one-take improvised celebration of the recording sessions. Often performing the works himself as pianist, and in collaboration with the “Bonde Family,” his oeuvres provide warmth, intimacy and compositional diversity with each piece.
