A carefully handpicked selection of new chamber works by contemporary composers designed to showcase the diversity of modern music-making, and these pieces by Sundin, Bakker, Sainsbury, Rusnak, Beeler, and Burns that cuts right through the oft-repeated misconception that classical music is dead on the vine. With rich sonorities, structural ingenuity, and artistic flair, the composers featured here prove that not only is classical music alive, but it continues to grow and cross-pollinate as well. Get out your best fork and knife, grab your napkin, pull up a chair, and feast!

Debut commercial release from the critically acclaimed Coro Allegro, Boston’s chorus for members and friends of the LGBT community. This album features two extraordinary works by composers from  Western Massachusetts: Shofar by Robert Stern, an intensely dramatic and deeply moving oratorio inspired by the four arresting calls of the shofar; and Why I Wake Early by Ronald Perera, with text drawn from the poetry of Mary Oliver. Both pieces have a similar underlying cyclical structure, moving from light through darkness, then emerging or awakening, with a renewed sense of restoration.

Using poems written by children incarcerated at the Terezin concentration camp during the second world war, Joyce-Walter composed the Cantata in order to evoke a universal compassion and empathy for the most innocent and vulnerable among us. By shining a light on the thoughts of children in the camps, the composer adds another layer to the global awareness of the atrocities committed during this historic period, further emphasizing the hope that these acts will happen never again. Likewise, Aceldama highlights horrors of the 21st century, serving as a meditation on human suffering occurring on such a large scale that its enormity is incomprehensible.
