New PARMA Artist: Ross Crean

Chicago-based composer/songwriter Ross Crean has signed on to record and release his opera “The Great God Pan” with PARMA.

Ross Crean

“The Great God Pan” is based on the Arthur Machen novella of the same name. Ross wrote the libretto and the music, which features a piano, prepared piano, and a cast of ten singers.

From the composer:
“The Great God Pan” is a story that leads us between two worlds, the material and the supernatural. It is a story where the horror lies not in the open for us to see, but in what our minds create from the unseen.

“The female characters have no voice in Machen’s book, so I worked at giving them a voice (particularly the character of Helen), and in doing so, brought a new perspective to the story; is Helen the Antichrist figure our protagonists make her out to be, or is she truly the savior of mankind, bringing a new age of sexual freedom to our world?

“My goal in this project is to ask these questions about how far we think we have come in terms of gender equality and religious dogma since those Victorian days.”
Text from the libretto and performance excerpts of “The Great God Pan” can be found on Ross’s website.

We’ll be hitting the studio with Ross this fall, but in the meantime, here’s a behind-the-scenes video with some rehearsal footage and interviews with Ross and some of the performers.

Welcome aboard, Ross!
